Fuel

Fuel

I'm from the North of England.
Know  about coal and brass and factories,
hard graft and making do. I know
that surface coal is easy pickings,
that it's deeper where the real wealth lies.
Deep in rock, hard to break free,
needing spade work, muscle,
or dynamite to shift it. To get coal
for warmth and light and fierce heat.
It needs more than surface sifting
and walks across the hillsides
to mine what you need
to keep the fires burning.
